While not as elaborate as many facial scars, this young girl sports the two near-vertical lines on either side of her nose, which are traditional facial scars of the Fulani tribe.

In the background stands a mat made from stalks of millet weaved together with strips of leather. The mat is called "yombeeo" in fulfulde, the language of the Fulani people, and comes from "yombe," the word for "millet stalks."
