"Bright in Blue"

Photo of primary (elementary) school children in their bright blue school uniforms in Nghe An Province, Vietnam

At the time of this photo (2004), approximately 50% of children attending school in Vietnam were malnourished, where hunger has been shown to reduce childrens' academic achievement.

The children in this school were benefiting from a "school milk" program implemented by the Vietnam Red Cross Society, in partnership with the American Red Cross. The children received a small carton of soymilk and a vitamin-fortified biscuit each morning at school. The children's families also received a 25-kg bag of corn soy blend and a 4-L tin of vitamin A-fortified vegetable oil, donated by the United States government.
