WHAT'S NEW AT IRENE ABDOU PHOTOGRAPHY
Quarterly Picture Postcard and Newsletter
Fall 2007, Volume 1, Issue 2

1. INTRO

Hello again and welcome to the 2007 Fall Newsletter. Every season has something wonderful and beautiful to photograph, and fall is certainly no exception. Waves of color across autumn-tinged trees make for beautiful landscape photos.

2. PICTURE POSTCARD

And that introduction leads me to this quarter’s Fall 2007 picture postcard!

Attached here, it is a sweeping image of fall colors across the stunning Blue Ridge Mountains in Front Royal, Virginia. Light from the sunset adds to the depth of the image, and creates the layers of blue in the background.

As with the last picture postcard, feel free to circulate the postcard to friends, family, etc. (no alterations please). If you would like one (or a few) print copies from me, send me an e-mail, and I’ll be happy to oblige. If you missed my last picture postcard, I’d be happy to mail out a few copies to you also. Or, view it first on the web in the Picture Postcard Gallery.

3. CHRISTMAS FINE ART PRINTS

Fine art prints make great gifts to family and friends, and there are now over 435 images to choose from. Most of my prints are sold in limited editions of 250/edition, and are available on Fujifilm Crystal Archive paper (Glossy) or Kodak Royal (Glossy), Kodak Professional Endura Supra Luster, or Kodak Professional Endura Metallic photo paper. These are some of the highest quality papers in existence with archival qualities of 50-100 years.

Note that to receive orders in the U.S. through standard shipping by December 23rd, you’ll need to place your order by December 9th. Also note that 8x10s, 11x14s, and 12x18s are all discounted for the holiday season, some at more than 20% off. That’s because when my printer goes on sale, it’s only fair that I pass the savings on to you! You may order online through the website, using Paypal to checkout.

In addition, if you’re local to the area, some of my prints are also on sale in store at Framing by Art Galaxy, located at 19725-C Germantown Road, Germantown, MD 21704 (tel. 301-540-9055). So if you’re local to the area, feel free to stop by to see some of the prints firsthand! In contrast with online orders, which are for un-matted prints, these prints are sold matted (white/ivory), mounted, and packaged, using only acid-free archival materials (so these mats will not yellow over time as non-archival mats will).

4. WHAT’S NEW ONLINE AT WWW.PHOTOSWITHSOUL.COM

I’ve added a lot of new images this quarter, so you may notice the website looking a little different from the last time you visited. In particular, check out the:

Scenics & 'Scapes Photography Gallery
Light & Movement Photography Gallery

There have been new editions to many of the other galleries as well. In addition, I’ve just begun a concerted effort to digitize some of my older travel/documentary film photographs from Niger, Burkina Faso, Mali, Morocco, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, and Indonesia, so you will begin to see those in the Travel & Editorial gallery in two months or so.

I’ve also added a Decorating Ideas section to the website, so if you’re not sure how to arrange those beautiful fine art prints on your wall, check out some of the articles there.

5. WHAT’S NEW WITH IRENE’S PHOTOGRAPHY

Well, this quarter’s been pretty good.

Group Exhibition
First, one of my photos from Niger, West Africa ("Confidence") (also the subject of last quarter’s picture postcard) was accepted into an exhibition at the Washington Gallery of Photography in Bethesda, MD. Only 48 of 400 entries from around the country were accepted. The “My Hometown” show ran from October 12th to November 6th, with the opening reception attended by several hundred people.

Web Publication
Then, the international multimedia news agency, Reuters, picked up five of my South Sudan photos for publication on their website slideshow. This was a proud feat because Reuters usually doesn’t accept images that were not shot that same week. Click here to view the images or pick up a link to the slideshow on the Reuters website.

Upcoming Solo Exhibition
And finally, I recently got on the calendar for a solo exhibition of my international travel/documentary work at the Frederick Arts Council in Frederick, Maryland. The solo exhibition is scheduled for May 3-June 4, 2008.

6. ON LOCATION PORTRAIT PHOTOGRAPHY SERVICES

I recently changed the pricing structure of my on location portrait photography services. In order to add better value, clients now receive a CD of high-resolution images, which they can print either through me or through an outside photo lab. With a 30-minute session, customers can expect to receive 25-50 high-quality images. In addition, I am now able to set up a private gallery of your photos – with your client login code, you can view and order all of your photos online, at your convenience. You can even give the code to friends and family so that they can view and order as well.

Visit the On Location Portrait & Casual Event Photography Services section for more information.

7. PHOTO TIP

Winter is beautiful, and snow makes for a beautiful winter photography backdrop. With winter almost upon us, and after having spent the last two winters in South Sudan, I am looking forward to some good winter landscape scenes. Yet, with large expanses of pure white snow in the picture, our cameras can be fooled. The camera tries to average the scene out to medium grey, so the camera’s meter underexposes for snow, and the snow ends up being grey. Therefore, when shooting a scene with a lot of white snow, pick up your camera manual to see how to adjust the “exposure compensation.” Overexpose by 1 ½ to 2 stops, and also bracket your shots (overexpose further and underexpose) to make sure you get at least one image that is just right.

8. PARTING WORDS

Thanks again for your interest in Irene Abdou Photography. Don’t forget the December 9th deadline for Christmas fine art prints at the standard shipping rate! And please feel free to forward this e-mail, as well as the attached picture postcard, to friends, family, or anyone else you know. Also feel free to e-mail me with your feedback! (And if you wish to unsubscribe from this e-mail list, let me know.)

Best regards,

Irene Abdou
